Deb Fan’s Ηaunting Νew Αlbum Ιs Αbout Βelonging Νowhere and Εverywhere
Hong Kong-raised, LA-based R&B rising star Deb Fan on reconciling identities, evolving artistically, and her new EP, "Kowloon Demos." For JoySauce.
One of the most undeniable additions to my “Best of 2024” (so far) playlist has been Deb Fan’s “Lady.” There is a transfixing quality to the Hong Kong-raised singer, songwriter and producer’s ethereal yet haunting R&B, which blends together classic soul influences and experimental notes, alongside speaking to Fan’s personal experiences across themes of heritage and identity.
Seeing as the opportunity presented itself, I was delighted to be able to interview the rising star in light of her latest release, Kowloon Demos. For JoySauce, I chatted with Fan about her creative journey, the nuances between her two cultural backgrounds, and maintaining authenticity in her music.
